Unusual Things to do in Llandudno
One of the great things about staying at Bryn Defaid Holiday Park is our close proximity to the popular seaside town of Llandudno. Complete with its famous pier, promenade and popular shopping district, Llandudno remains a popular holiday destination with tourists from across the world.
While its most popular attractions are fairly widely known, there are also a small number of unique and unusual things to do in Llandudno that you likely won’t find anywhere else.
We’ve used our local knowledge and thirst for the unusual to put together a short list of some of the most unusual things to do in Llandudno that you may wish to take into consideration the next time you are enjoying a holiday at Bryn Defaid Holiday Park:
Great Orme Tramway
Did you know that Llandudno is home to the UK’s only remaining cable operated tramway?
Opened in 1902, the Great Orme Tramway takes passengers from Llandudno’s Victoria Station all the way up to the summit of the Great Orme headland which very much dominates the landscape of the region. Once you arrive here you can admire unrivalled views overlooking Llandudno and areas of Snowdonia National Park.
These views are even more enjoyable with a refreshing beverage in your hand. These can be purchased from the Great Orme Summit Complex which has its own café, restaurant and bar. Other amenities available here include a children’s play area and mini golf course which is great fun for all the family.
UFO Room at the Great Orme Summit Complex
These aren’t the only visitor attractions that are available in the Great Orme Summit Complex. One of the less publicised is the off the beaten track UFO Room.
While most of the displays throughout the complex are dedicated to the natural history of the region and the glorious views that it affords, the UFO room is something of an outlier. This particular section chronicles the many UFO sightings that have been made at the Great Orme since the 1960s.
Here you will be able to cast your eyes over a variety of fascinating news clippings chronicling the various encounters, in addition to tongue in cheek UFO models of the Millennium Falcon in addition to various other Sci-Fi movie memorabilia.
Alice in Wonderland Town Trail
Llandudno has been a popular seaside holiday destination for British holidaymakers for generations and one such family during the 1860s was the Liddell's who liked the area so much that they bought a holiday home here on Llandudno’s West Shore.
Their daughter Alice was close friends with a young boy called Charles Dodgson who would later write books under the pen name of Lewis Carroll. Carroll’s most famous novel was of course ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and it is a widely held belief that his inspiration for this novel came during a holiday he shared with Alice Liddell in Llandudno during this era.
In recognition of this connection, you will find a plethora of Alice in Wonderland themed sculptures scattered across the town. This has been turned into a fun Alice in Wonderland Town Trail which is a great activity for families to complete with their children. Keep your eyes peeled for iconic landmarks such as the white rabbit sculpture which comes complete with a waistcoat and pocket watch. Alice in Wonderland Town Trail maps can be purchased for just £1.99 from the tourist information centre.
Mini Figures Llandudno
If you have a penchant for the geeky side of popular culture, then you will feel like you have arrived in heaven when you pay a visit to the Mr Minifigure store on Llandudno’s famous promenade.
Here you can browse through a brilliant collection of Lego minifigures which have been put together by resident geek Stewart. These figures can be purchased as standalone products or in the form of keyrings, in baubles or in picture frames. Personalised figures are also available to be purchased here if you are looking for a unique gift for a friend or family member back home.
Alongside the Lego figures, there are also some seriously professional (and expensive) figurines for sale in the adjoining store. The store is pretty easy to spot, because it is the one with the larger model of Darth Vader hanging over the entrance door!
Home Front Museum
While you will find many museums across the UK which focus on the battles, strategies and machines that played a part in World War II, you won’t find too many that are dedicated to the lives of those who remained back home.
This is what Llandudno’s Home Front Museum aims to put right with a fascinating collection of collections which aim to transport tourists back to this dark period of human history. Unquestionably one of the most impressive parts of the museum are the collection of shop fronts, each of which display the products and advertisements that typical stores of the day would display.
From gas marks to ration books, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how these items were utilised during the period and purchase some unique presents from the gift shop for those back home.
