Top 5 Best Fish and Chips in Colwyn Bay
No visit to the seaside is complete unless you buy yourself a bag of fish and chips and when you enjoy a seaside holiday in Colwyn Bay, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding your chosen diner.
The town is filled with everything from traditional British chippies to eateries with a slightly more international selection which are still a dab hand when it comes to cooking that highly sought after seaside classic.
We thought that we’d help you decide which of the restaurants and takeaways on offer do the best fish and chips in Colwyn Bay ready for the next time that you have a hankering for this simple but delightful British favourite. Without further ado, here is number one…
1. Greenfield Road Chippy
Located on Greenfield Road, the aptly named Greenfield Road Chippy is in our opinion the best source of fish & chips in Colwyn Bay.
While it doesn’t look particularly special from the outside, the team on-site are renowned for their friendly temperament and perfectly cooked creations. You can choose from your standard chippy staples including battered cod, scampi, fish cakes and pies or try one of their popular beef burgers.
In the mood for a portion that is a little less daunting? Then you may prefer to opt for one of their chip baps or a cone of chips. Just your usual chip shop favourites but done exceptionally well.
2. Freshmans & Co. Fish & Chips
It is a pretty difficult job to choose between Greenfield Road Chippy and Freshmans & Co, but in our list we’ve put it at number two.
Located in the main town on station road, Freshman’s & Co has recently undergone a dramatic refurbishment resulting in a far more modern establishment. While the food is of the same very high standard, the surroundings are now far more inviting with Freshman’s & Co having a far larger dining area than Greenfield Road Chippy.
Freshman’s & Co is also a great option for those who are looking for pet friendly restaurants in Colwyn Bay, with our four legged friends being more than welcome to join in on the dining experience.
3. James' Fish Bar
James’ Fish Bar is the first takeaway on the list which also serves Chinese dishes alongside those firm British classics. In fact, the Chinese dishes are probably more popular than than fish & chips here with diners able to choose from sweet & sour, chow mein, curries and many other Chinese delights including a selection of starters and desserts such as tasty banana fritters.
That isn’t to say that they skimp on Western classics though, with good old fashioned British pies available alongside American style burgers and omelettes. One dish that we would highlight for particular praise is their fish burger which is quite simply out of this world.
While James’ Fish Bar isn’t quite in the same league as the first two options on this list when it comes to the main fish & chips dish, the wide selection of alternative meals makes it a great option for families whose members all have varying tastes and preferences.
4. Alex's Fish Bar
Back now to a more traditional fish & chip shop in Colwyn Bay in the form of Alex’s Fish Bar. Located on Abergele Road in the town centre, this is one of the town's most popular chippy takeaways with your usual chip shop classics available including a selection of different fish options made up of cod, haddock or plaice. The restaurant is also pretty renowned for its fish cakes and filling scampi options.
Alex’s Fish Bar tries hard to accommodate all members of the family with a separate kids menu available made up of scampi & chips, chicken nuggets, cheese & onion pies and more.
However, Alex’s Fish Bar is the first eatery on the list to also offer kebabs with the option to have your meat in a standard pitta bread or even a naan bread. If you feel like being healthy, you can request a side salad with your kebab too.
5. The Toad
Although technically not a fish & chip shop, The Toad gastro pub on the West promenade can certainly lay claim to offering the best fish & chips in Colwyn Bay.
A winner at the annual Welsh Food Awards, the Toad lives up to its reputation of delivering the very best British produce and their fish & chips dish is no exception. Their battered haddock is served with traditional chunky chips, unconventional miso pea puree and homemade tartar sauce. A children’s sized portion is also available, in this case simply served with pea as opposed to the more extravagant miso pea puree.
Apart from the exceptional food, what makes the toad so spectacular are the stunning coastal views that are on offer. These are best enjoyed from the outdoor dining section at the front of the restaurant which is located directly across the road from Colwyn Bay’s scenic promenade.
