Our Guide to Conwy Watersports

05 September 2024

If you are a fan of watersports, then there is no better holiday destination than Conwy county in North Wales. Here you’ll find a plethora of Conwy watersport activity centres, trainers and equipment suppliers, ensuring that you will have everything that you need in order to indulge your passion for the sport.

To help save you the time and effort of researching, we thought we’d utilise our local knowledge to put together a quick guide summarising the best Conwy watersport locations to visit and everything that you need to know in order to take part in the various activities that are available in the region.

Colwyn Bay Watersports

Bryn Defaid Holiday Park is actually located in what is arguably the Conwy watersports capital. Take the short drive down to Porth Eirias on the Colwyn Bay coast and you’ll almost certainly find some form of sporting activity taking place.

The clean waters and golden sands of Colwyn Bay beach make it ideal for such activities, with the Conwy surfing community being particularly well acquainted with the destination. Porth Eirias itself is home to the Colwyn Jetski club and Môr - a watersports supply shop which sells everything from surf boards and kayaks, to dry suits and water repellent seat covers for your car. The expert staff are even happy to offer advice if you are looking to partake in these activities for the first time.

While there aren’t any jet skis available to hire on the site, there is nothing to stop you purchasing the necessary equipment from Môr and taking to the sea with your new surfboard, kayak or f-foil. If you are operating on a budget, then why not try a stop of wild swimming which is another popular watersport activity across all seasons, even during those frightfully cold winter months.

Llandudno Boat Rides

If you're happy to sit back and let someone else take the controls, then there are a variety of boat adventures to take advantage of from the beautiful Llandudno promenade.

One of the newer additions here has been an exciting jet boat rib ride which takes participants on a thrilling journey along the Llandudno coastline.

However, if you prefer a slightly gentler pace of life, you may prefer to take one of the boat trips that are available from the same location. Here you can enjoy a gentle tour around the caves and lighthouse, or even a slightly longer trip which takes full advantage of the Great Orme.

Race to the Finish

If you are lucky enough to own your own sailing ship, then you may want to get involved in the many races that are organised across the year by the North Wales Cruising Club.

Based in Conwy Marine, where you’ll find reasonably priced mooring fee packages, the club organises a number of races around the area with prizes handed out to the victor of each event in addition to the overall winner across the Boatfolk series of races.

Participation in the events is dependent on being a North Wales Cruising Club member, but that does come with access to a shore and online based courses to help you learn everything that you need to know about captaining your own ship.

Conwy Watersports Events

These aren’t the only watersports events that are available in the Conwy region, with the Conwy Sailing & Watersports Group also organising the annual Conwy River Festival.

Taking place in July of each year, the event takes place over a number of days at the Conwy Quay. From here a number of different races are run made up of canoe races, jet ski and sailing races.

This is very much a family event, with Conwy Quay essentially transformed into a funfair with a plethora of rides and attractions which will keep people of all ages entertained. It’s a great destination for a family day out in North Wales, irrespective of your interest in watersports.

If you are willing to travel outside of Conwy county, then there are a number of other great destinations to be explored including the White Water Active Outdoor Adventure Centre where participants are able to get involved in a wide variety of activities such as Whitewater rafting, canyoning and canoeing.
