Best Things to do in Snowdonia in the Winter
If you are looking for things to do in Snowdonia in winter, then you’ll find that there are plenty of attractions and activities available for you to choose from with something for all ages and interests.
While the weather may be a little chilly, in many ways there is no better time to explore the Snowdonia region which becomes even more stunning during this time of year. With dramatic landscapes, snow capped mountains and much smaller crowds than is ordinarily the case, winter is a great time of year to uncover the many wonders that Snowdonia has to offer.
Ahead of your next trip to Bryn Defaid Holiday Park, we thought we’d put together a short list highlighting the best things to do in Snowdonia in winter so that you can come well prepared to make the most of your time in the region. Without further delay, here is number one…
1. Snowdon Mountain Walks
Of course, the most famous visitor attraction in Snowdonia is the large mountain that the region is named after. There are a number of different walking routes to choose from if you are looking to reach the peak of Snowdon which vary in difficulty.
The most popular and easiest route is the Llanberis path. This is the best option for newcomers to the region, particular during the harsh winter months. Nevertheless, with a total distance of 9 miles (there and back), it is still a significant challenge.
However, when you do reach the peak you will feel that all of the effort was very much worth it as you can marvel at the majestic views overlooking the snow covered Glyderau mountains. In fact, on a clear day, you’ll even be able to enjoy views of Anglesey and the Menai Strait.
The popularity of this route means that there are plenty of facilities available to tourists. This includes the Halfway House café which offers much needed hot beverages to ramblers before they continue their trip.
2. Visit a Castle
Snowdonia National Park is almost as famous for its historic attractions as it is for its mountains, with there being plenty of awe inspiring castles and stately homes just waiting to be explored in the region.
One of the most impressive of these is Harlech Castle; a UNESCO World Heritage site and grade 1 listed fortification which was built by King Edward I during his invasion of Wales during the late 13th century. It is still a magnificent building to behold particularly during the winter months as the smaller crowds mean that you can really take the time to pay homage to this remarkable construction.
Another popular castle to visit in Snowdonia National Park is Caernarfon Castle which was also built by King Edward I during his Welsh invasion. However, the site played a significant role in the politics of the region far earlier than this with a motte and bailey castle being constructed here during the Norman conquest of Britain during the 11th century. It is therefore a fantastic site of interest for history buffs, with the town of Caernarfon itself also being a great place to spend a couple of hours during a winter's day.
3. Indoor Attractions
If you are looking for things to do in Snowdonia in the winter and can’t quite bring yourself to face the icy conditions, then you may prefer to visit one of the many indoor visitor attractions in the region.
One such attraction is the National Slate Museum in Llanberis which provides tourists with a fascinating glimpse into the slate mining heritage of the region and the lives of those who worked in the industry during the Victorian period.
Another option is the Conwy Valley Railway Museum where you can ride a miniature railway or head indoors where you can operate model trains and browse through a wide selection of historic railway memorabilia. This is a must visit for all train enthusiasts.
4. Zip World
If you prefer something a little more adrenaline pumping, then you may prefer to pay a visit to Zip World Fforest near Betws-y-Coed. The attraction is open all year round and offers exciting activities like the Fforest Coaster where you will enjoy a thrilling alpine-style ride through the trees.
Another option here is the Zip Safari, a 60 metre high tree top climbing experience made up of rope bridges, netting, balance boards and a tree top surfboard! This is a great option for families who are looking for ways to keep the kids entertained, with children age 9 and above being welcome to take on the challenge.
5. Birdwatching
Winter is also a great time of year for birdwatching in Snowdonia National Park. You can pay a visit to the RSPB Conwy Nature Reserve where you’ll be able to enjoy a scenic stroll whilst also catching a glimpse of the many migrating bird species who frequent the region during this time of year. This includes Waterfowl, Marsh Harriers, Woodcock and many other beautiful species.
Located roughly 8 miles away from Bryn Defaid Holiday Park, this is the ideal winter activity in Snowdonia National Park for twitchers. However, remember to bring plenty of warm clothing for the experience, particular if you are going to be stationary for prolonged periods of time.
